Luoyang hosts Global Mayors Dialogue on urban heritage preservation

The Global Mayors Dialogue 2026 took place in Luoyang, Henan province, from October 9 to 11. The event focused on the theme of passing down the heritage of ancient capitals and mutual learning between urban civilizations.

Italian officials, including Roberto Di Stefano, the mayor of Sesto San Giovanni, and representatives from Bologna and Dolo, participated in the dialogue. The delegation visited local cultural sites to discuss urban redevelopment and the protection of cultural heritage.

Discussions highlighted Luoyang’s approach to preserving its identity as an ancient capital of thirteen dynasties. For instance, when planning an industrial district in the 1950s, Luoyang deliberately selected an area away from the historic center to protect archaeological remains. The city has since developed archaeological parks and museums to increase public access to its history.
