Lupita Nyong'o addresses racist backlash over casting in Nolan's 'The Odyssey'

Academy‑award winner Lupita Nyong'o told Elle that she will not engage with the racist commentary surrounding her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, noting that criticism “will exist” regardless of her response. She expressed support for Nolan’s intention to assemble a diverse cast that includes Zendaya, Corey Hawkins and Travis Scott.

Elon Musk, using his X platform, attacked the casting, claiming Nolan “desecrated The Odyssey” to chase an Oscar and that the director “lost his integrity.” Nolan rebutted the criticism, saying the role required “strength and poise” and that Nyong'o delivers both effortlessly. Social‑media users largely defended Nyong'o and condemned the hateful remarks.
