Lupita Nyong'o Rejects Racist Backlash Over Helen of Troy Casting in Nolan's 'The Odyssey'
Oscar‑winner Lupita Nyong'o addressed the online racist criticism of her casting as Helen of Troy (and Clytemnestra) in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey. In an interview with Elle, she emphasized that the film is a mythological story and that the diverse cast “represents the world.” Nyong'o said she will not spend time defending the choice, noting that criticism will exist regardless, and added, “You can’t perform beauty; I want to know who the character is beyond looks.”
She also referenced director Nolan’s support, who described her as possessing the necessary strength and assurance for the role. The backlash, amplified by far‑right commentators and figures such as Elon Musk, also targeted fellow cast members Travis Scott and Elliot Page. Nyong’o said the ensemble’s diversity is central to the film’s ambition. The production, reported to have a $250 million budget, is slated for worldwide release in July 2026 (July 15–17, depending on region).
