Former PSD leader Luís Marques Mendes has announced that his active political career, in terms of holding office or running for election, has ended. Speaking at the PSD Summer University in Castelo de Vide, Mendes stated that while he is finished with formal political roles, he does not rule out a return to political commentary, noting he has already received invitations.

During his address, which included a tribute to the late Francisco Pinto Balsemão, Mendes criticized the current state of Portuguese politics, describing a climate of constant tension and a feeling of being in a “permanent electoral campaign.” He called for “democratic humility” and political understanding among parties to allow the country to move forward, citing the legacies of Balsemão and Mário Soares as examples of consensus-building.

Mendes also addressed the topic of constitutional revision, arguing that a major overhaul is not currently a priority or a necessity, though he suggested that surgical changes could be beneficial. In response to his comments, PS Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro remarked that Mendes “put his finger on the wound,” suggesting the current government lacks the political humility Mendes described.
