Luís Montenegro supports António Costa for European Council presidency

Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has expressed support for António Costa to continue as President of the European Council. Montenegro stated that maintaining Costa in this role is the path to ensuring “more stability and greater operational capacity” for the European Union, allowing for better cooperation between member states and institutions.

Montenegro emphasized that such stability is essential for the EU to remain efficient in executing decisions made across its various bodies. He also reiterated support for Roberta Metsola to remain as President of the European Parliament.

When asked about maintaining current leadership for an additional two and a half years to ensure stability, Metsola noted that a final decision is not required until January. She remarked that while political noise increases as elections approach, she appreciates Costa’s work in the European Council.
