Lusa Editorial Council rejects Diana Ramos as Information Director
The Editorial Council of the Lusa news agency has issued a negative opinion regarding the appointment of journalist Diana Ramos as Information Director. The decision, which consists of two negative votes and three abstentions, is non-binding but mandatory under agency regulations.
The Council expressed concerns that the current period requires a director with specific experience in public service news, suggesting that internal candidates could have been considered. Members also raised alarms regarding potential editorial interference, citing the recent removal of the previous director, Luísa Meireles, and questioning the impact of current agency statutes on editorial autonomy.
While the agency's Board of Directors maintains that the appointment is legitimate, the Council has requested an urgent review from the ERC (Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social) to determine if the Board has the legal authority to make such a definitive appointment under European media regulations.
