Portugal government advocates modernization of RTP and Lusa

Portuguese Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, has advocated for the modernization of public media services, specifically RTP and the news agency Lusa, to adapt to digital transformation and changing consumption habits. He emphasized that the country requires both a media service and a news agency to ensure information reaches all territories and audiences.

Regarding Lusa, the Minister addressed ongoing tensions by stating that workers do not wish to revert to previous governance models, despite protests. This follows a ruling by the ERC suggesting that recent restructuring may not comply with standards for independent public media, potentially impacting the agency's perceived independence.

In broader political developments, the PSD and CDS are proposing different amendments to a decree regarding the use of flags on public buildings, which was previously vetoed by President António José Seguro. Meanwhile, IL leader Mariana Leitão criticized the government's economic outlook and its handling of Social Security data, and former President Aníbal Cavaco Silva commented on the excessive political and media noise currently affecting the country.
