Luísa Meireles to depart as news director of Lusa agency

Luísa Meireles, the news director of the Lusa news agency, is stepping down from her position after eight years. Meireles announced she has signed a contract revocation agreement and will depart on October 12, following a departure proposal from the agency’s Board of Directors.

Meireles described the working environment as having become “unsustainable” over time. She stated that her role aimed to act as a “bridge and a barrier” between the newsroom and the Board, maintaining that she never interfered with the editorial freedom of journalists during her tenure.

The departure follows recent testimony by Lusa Board President Joaquim Carreira before the Assembly of the Republic. During that hearing, Carreira cited legal age limits for the role and potential conflicts of interest regarding Meireles’s position as president of the Professional Journalist Card Commission (CCPJ) as factors. Meireles characterized the parliamentary hearing as witnessing a “dismissal in live broadcast.”
