Lutein‑rich foods highlighted for eye health
Lutein, a carotenoid pigment, acts as a powerful antioxidant that the body cannot produce on its own, requiring regular dietary intake. It accumulates in the macula lutea of the retina, where it protects retinal cells from oxidative stress, age‑related degeneration and damage from UV exposure. Because lutein is fat‑soluble, absorption improves when eaten with healthy fats such as olive oil, avocado or nuts.
Experts from the Baviera Eye Clinic identify five foods with the highest lutein content. Kale (cavolo riccio) provides the greatest density of lutein and zeaxanthin per gram, supporting retinal repair and vascular health. Spinach is also a rich source, especially when cooked, which releases the pigment for better uptake. The specialists advise incorporating small portions of these green, leafy vegetables into everyday meals—e.g., adding spinach to smoothies or using kale in salads, soups or baked chips—to maintain optimal vision and, additionally, support brain health.
