LUX-ZEPLIN experiment detects potential dark matter signal

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, located nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, has recorded a single particle interaction that may provide the first evidence of dark matter. The event, which researchers have analyzed from 220 days of data collected between March 2023 and April 2024, does not match known background radiation patterns.

While the signal is considered the most compelling hint of dark matter to date, it has not yet reached the 5-sigma statistical threshold required for a formal scientific discovery. The current significance stands at 2.6 sigma, meaning there is a 0.5% chance the event was caused by known background processes. The interaction could potentially involve a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP), a leading candidate for dark matter.

The LZ experiment is an international collaboration of 250 scientists from 39 institutions, managed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The detector utilizes 10 tonnes of ultrapure liquid xenon to identify the faint flashes of light produced when a particle strikes an atom.
