Luxembourg agriculture faces challenges from extreme 2026 drought

Luxembourg's agricultural sector is facing significant challenges due to an exceptionally hot and dry 2026 season. The drought has led to historically early grape harvests, with the first clusters collected in Wintrange as early as August 17. While the heat has resulted in smaller grape sizes and lower expected yields, officials note that the fruit remains healthy with high aromatic concentration, potentially producing high-quality, expressive wines.

In response to the widespread drought, which is being treated as a case of force majeure, Agriculture Minister Martine Hansen has announced several relief measures for farmers. These include exemptions from sanctions for those unable to meet certain obligations due to weather conditions and increased flexibility regarding grassland management and buffer zones. The measures aim to support farmers struggling with forage shortages and difficulties in sowing winter crops.
