Luxembourg Airport suspends flights due to unauthorized drone sightings
Luxembourg's Findel Airport suspended flight operations during the night of Friday to Saturday following the detection of unauthorized drones in its airspace and perimeter. The suspension was implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers, crews, staff, and aircraft.
The incident caused significant disruption, affecting more than 1,800 passengers. Approximately 17 to 20 flights, including several from the national carrier Luxair, were diverted to other airports such as Liège, Cologne, Brussels, Paris, and Frankfurt. Some flights, including those from KLM and Air Dolomiti, were forced to return before landing.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden stated that the government is investigating the incident and has observed the presence of potentially larger drones in the country's airspace in recent days. Luxembourg is coordinating with NATO partners to analyze the situation, amid broader European concerns regarding hybrid threats. The government has convened its inter-ministerial drone assessment cell to evaluate the event. The origin and identity of the drone operators remain unknown.
