Luxembourg hosts summit of German‑language parliamentary presidents

From Monday, the presidents of the German‑speaking parliaments gathered in Luxembourg at the Château de Bourglinster. Claude Wiseler, president of Luxembourg's Chamber of Deputies, welcomed Julia Klöckner (Germany), Manfred Kaufmann (Liechtenstein), Walter Rosenkranz (Austria), Patricia Creutz‑Vilvoye (Belgian German‑language Community) and Katja Christ (Switzerland). The first day focused on a “stress test of Luxembourg’s democratic institutions,” with Wiseler stressing that international law provides tools against authoritarian drift, but they must be applied fairly and promptly. The leaders concluded that democracy can no longer be taken for granted and called for greater societal resilience. Tuesday’s programme includes exchanges on each country’s current political situation and a meeting with Grand‑Duke Guillaume.

The summit, organized since 2016, underscores the role of parliaments in safeguarding democratic norms across the six German‑speaking jurisdictions.
