The Luxembourg Independent Audiovisual Authority (ALIA) is investigating the ownership and management changes of N1 television to determine their impact on editorial independence. The probe follows the late August takeover of several media outlets, including N1 and Nova S, by Alpac Capital, a company owned by Portuguese businessman Pedro Vargas.

N1’s editorial staff reported that management applied for a Serbian broadcasting license through the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) in early October without consulting the newsroom. ALIA confirmed that the station’s Luxembourgish license remains active and that the application to REM does not automatically transfer N1 from Luxembourgish to Serbian regulatory jurisdiction.

ALIA is currently examining whether actual control over N1’s programming was transferred during the ownership shift and whether management or owners have exerted pressure on journalists or influenced reporting, particularly regarding elections in Serbia.
