Luxury brands exit Basel's Freie Strasse shopping street
Luxury brands are exiting Basel’s Freie Strasse, the city's oldest and most prominent shopping street. High vacancy rates have become a major concern for residents following recent renovations to the pedestrian zone.
Several high-profile closures occurred this summer, including Louis Vuitton, Bally, and the traditional boutique Sophys. Even premium fitness brand Techno Gym closed its location after less than a year.
Experts suggest the exodus is driven by broader trends in the global luxury industry rather than local issues alone. The sector is facing pressure from global inflation, which has reduced middle-class spending power, and geopolitical instability in the Gulf region, a key market for luxury goods. Consequently, companies are consolidating operations to focus on more profitable locations such as Geneva, Zurich, or Swiss mountain resorts like St. Moritz and Gstaad.
