Luxury goods seized from tax delinquents fetch high prices at auction

Luxury goods seized from high-value tax delinquents have fetched significantly higher prices than their appraised values at a recent public auction in South Korea. During the 23rd auction held at KINTEX in Goyang, a Chanel Classic Flap Bag with gold hardware, despite being rated as 'C-grade' due to visible wear and stains, sold for 11.01 million won—more than double its initial auction price of 4.5 million won.

Other notable sales included a gold-hardware Chanel bag that sold for 7.86 million won and a Chanel Coco Handle that reached 5.48 million won. While brands like Louis Vuitton and Hermès were also featured, Chanel items saw the highest demand. For instance, the highest sale for a Louis Vuitton item was 2.45 million won, and some items failed to find bidders entirely.

In the watch and jewelry category, a Hublot watch sold for 18.75 million won, and a Cartier bracelet was auctioned for 8.56 million won. The auction, organized by the Korea Auction to recover unpaid local taxes, involved 620 items seized from delinquent taxpayers across 21 municipalities in Gyeonggi Province. Through the auction and voluntary payments, Gyeonggi Province successfully collected a total of 780 million won in delinquent taxes.
