Luxury hospitality shifts toward small, private boutique hotels

A new trend is emerging in the luxury hospitality sector, characterized by the rise of ultra-small hotels that prioritize privacy and personal connection over large-scale amenities. Instead of massive resorts with expansive spas and buffet breakfasts, these boutique establishments aim to provide the atmosphere of a private luxury home.

In Florence, the upcoming La Réserve Firenze in a 15th-century palazzo will feature only six suites. The model relies on personalized service, such as scheduled breakfasts and a trust-based rooftop bar. Similar small-scale luxury accommodations are appearing across Europe and the United States, including Eriro in the Austrian Alps and Casa Cedo in Porto.

This shift is partly driven by growing dissatisfaction with overtourism. Small hotels offer a sense of tranquility and seclusion in popular destinations. Experts note that true luxury is increasingly defined by intimacy and tailored experiences rather than a high volume of facilities.

On a smaller scale, hospitality experts emphasize that even home guest rooms can emulate this sense of care. Key elements for a welcoming environment include thoughtful lighting, cleanliness, organized storage, and small personal touches that make guests feel expected and comfortable.
