Luxury hospitality: The definition of 6-star hotels

The term ‘6-star hotel’ has emerged as an informal industry descriptor to distinguish ultra-luxury accommodations from traditional 5-star establishments. While official international rating systems, such as Forbes Travel Guide and AAA, typically cap luxury ratings at 5 stars or 5 diamonds, the 6-star label is used to describe architectural masterpieces and service levels that redefine luxury.

The concept gained prominence following the 1999 opening of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. After a British journalist remarked that standard rating scales were insufficient to evaluate the property, the term became a global shorthand for hotels offering extreme opulence, highly personalized service, and superior security. These establishments are characterized by iconic architecture and prime locations, such as major financial hubs or unique natural wonders.
