Luxury retailers looted during widespread riots across France

Widespread rioting and looting across several French cities have targeted luxury retailers, pharmacies, and supermarkets. In Paris, high-end boutiques including Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Yves Saint Laurent, Rolex, Dior, Burberry, and Kenzo were targeted. At Place Vendôme, masked individuals used a road barrier as a battering ram against a Louis Vuitton storefront, while other retailers like Ralph Lauren suffered smashed windows.

The unrest, which began in mid-September over school funding and teacher shortages in Paris suburbs, evolved into broader protests against the cost of living, fuel prices, and public-sector pay freezes. On October 17, a nationwide day of action saw approximately 550,000 participants, including students, unions, and Yellow Vest supporters.

Law enforcement faced significant challenges as protesters reportedly used social media to coordinate movements, leading to instances where police were overwhelmed. While curfews helped calm cities like Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux by Monday night, insurance costs resulting from the weekend's destruction are estimated to reach between €1 billion and €1.2 billion.
