Luz y Fuerza del Centro former officials see pension reductions

Transparency records from June 2026 indicate a significant reduction in the monthly pensions of three former officials from Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC). Previously, in March 2026, these individuals received monthly payments exceeding 1.8 million pesos. According to updated records, Jorge Evodio Chapa de la Torre, Edgar Velázquez Butrón, and Kenneth Sydney Smith Jacobo now receive 56,362 pesos per month, representing a reduction of over 97%.

This adjustment follows a reform to Article 127 of the Mexican Constitution, published on April 10, 2026. The reform establishes new limits for pensions and retirements for personnel in decentralized organisms, state-owned enterprises, and development banking. The law includes transitional articles requiring that pensions granted prior to the reform also be adjusted to these new limits, provided they do not fall under specific exemptions.

Exemptions to these reductions include pensions for the Armed Forces, voluntary retirement contributions, and union-based complementary systems. Luz y Fuerza del Centro was officially extinguished in 2009, though its financial obligations remained.
