Economic leaders debate fiscal management in Brazil and ECB inflation risks
In Brazil, economist Marcelo Kayath, a potential candidate for the Ministry of Finance in a Flávio Bolsonaro administration, argues that fiscal stability cannot be achieved through spending cuts alone. He advocates for a ‘management shock’ to eliminate inefficiencies across the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches while preserving social programs like Bolsa Família and BPC. Adolfo Sachsida, economic coordinator for Flávio Bolsonaro, reinforced this stance by stating that a proposed R$ 200 billion adjustment would target government excesses rather than privatizing state-owned enterprises like Petrobras or Banco do Brasil.
In Europe, the European Central Bank (ECB) reported that inflation risks remain tilted upward due to energy price volatility stemming from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. While inflation is expected to stay above the 2% target for longer, officials noted that wage growth remains moderate. Meanwhile, Pierre Wunsch, Governor of the National Bank of Belgium, expressed opposition to increasing mandatory reserve ratios for commercial banks, warning that such a move could act as a fiscal instrument rather than a monetary one. Additionally, Banco de Portugal Governor Álvaro Santos Pereira emphasized that central banks should focus on controlling inflation rather than intervening in sovereign debt markets, such as those in France, noting that fiscal issues must be resolved through structural reforms and budget discipline.
