Álvaro Vargas Llosa appointed as Peru's ambassador to the United States

The Peruvian government has officially appointed Álvaro Vargas Llosa as the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the United States. The appointment was formalized through Supreme Resolution N.° 173-2026-RE, published in the official gazette El Peruano on October 14.

President Keiko Fujimori expressed her confidence in the appointment via social media, stating that Vargas Llosa’s “trajectory, experience, and commitment to our country” will help strengthen bilateral relations and friendship between Peru and the United States.

Vargas Llosa has indicated that his mission will focus on expanding cooperation in security, technology, and trade. He also advocated for Peru’s potential participation in the ‘Shield of the Americas’ regional security initiative and emphasized increasing U.S. involvement in Peruvian foreign trade while maintaining national sovereignty. The exact date he will assume his duties will be determined by a subsequent ministerial resolution.
