Lviv Council declares 2027 year of UPA and Roman Shukhevych

The Lviv Regional Council has passed a resolution designating 2027 as the year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), its commander Roman Shukhevych, and Oleh Olzhych. The decision, aimed at commemorating the 85th anniversary of the UPA's founding and the 120th birthdays of the leaders, has triggered significant diplomatic tension between Poland and Ukraine.

Polish officials, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, have condemned the move. Poland views the UPA as responsible for the genocide of ethnic Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia during World War II. Polish officials have described the decision as a “suicidal tactic” that risks damaging bilateral relations and cooperation.

While the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has attempted to distance itself from the regional council's decision, Polish leaders have criticized the response as insufficient. Specifically, Polish authorities have called for entry bans for the resolution's initiators, noting that only one individual, Swiatosław Szeremet, has been designated as undesirable in Poland despite dozens of council members voting in favor of the measure.
