Mexico proposes Lydia Antonio de la Garza as new ambassador to Peru

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has proposed Lydia Antonio de la Garza as the new extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Peru. The proposal was sent to the Mexican Senate for ratification following instructions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

This appointment is a key step in the normalization of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Peru, which were officially restored on August 7, 2026. The diplomatic rupture began in November 2025 after Mexico granted political asylum to Betssy Chávez, the former Peruvian Prime Minister, who had sought refuge in the Mexican Embassy in Lima following her conviction related to the attempted coup involving former President Pedro Castillo.

Lydia Antonio de la Garza is a career diplomat with over 25 years of experience in the Mexican Foreign Service. She currently serves as the Executive Director 'B' of the Institute of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans Abroad (IMME). Her professional background includes significant roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy, where she supervised commercial agreements with over 50 countries and participated in negotiations for the USMCA (T-MEC).
