Lydia Ko denies ‘emperor golf’ allegations involving Kim Hye-kyung

Professional golfer Lydia Ko has issued a direct rebuttal against allegations that she provided free golf lessons to Kim Hye-kyung, the wife of President Lee Jae-myung. Ko released photos and her schedule via social media to prove she was attending an official sponsor event on the date in question, stating the reports are entirely unrelated to her.

The controversy began when People Power Party lawmaker Joo Jin-woo raised suspicions during a National Assembly audit, suggesting that Kim participated in ‘emperor golf’—a term implying preferential or improper treatment—at Taereung Country Club. Joo suggested that if free lessons were provided, it could constitute a violation of anti-graft laws.

In response to calls for an apology from the Democratic Party, Joo stated he would not issue a public apology, labeling the demand a ‘leftist frame.’ While he noted he could apologize in a private setting, he maintained that his focus was on the broader issue of public officials using state resources for private leisure. The Democratic Party has announced plans to file a complaint against Joo regarding his claims.
