Lymphoma awareness: Experts highlight key symptoms and early detection
Medical experts are highlighting the importance of early detection and awareness regarding lymphoma, a group of cancers originating from lymphocytes. The disease is categorized into two main groups: Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, with over 70 different subtypes that vary in progression and required treatment.
Key symptoms to monitor include painless swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin that does not diminish after several weeks. Other critical systemic indicators, often referred to as B symptoms, include unexplained fever, night sweats, and significant weight loss (more than 10% of body weight within six months).
Experts note that age plays a role in prevalence; Hodgkin lymphoma is most common among young adults aged 15–39, while non-Hodgkin lymphoma is more frequent in individuals over 60. A definitive diagnosis requires a biopsy and histopathological examination of the affected tissue. While lymphoma is a treatable condition, early intervention and regular follow-up care are essential for successful outcomes.
