Brazil attracts R$ 17.5 billion in rare earth mineral investments
Brazil is emerging as a significant hub for the rare earth minerals sector, attracting substantial international interest. At least 18 foreign companies are currently engaged in research or exploration projects within the country, with total investments and implementation estimates exceeding R$ 17.5 billion (approximately US$ 3.5 billion). The majority of these companies are from Australia, followed by Canada and the United States.
Lynas Rare Earths, a major non-Chinese producer, is advancing plans to establish a rare earth separation plant in Brazil, potentially supported by financing from the Brazilian National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). This follows Lynas's R$ 3.5 billion acquisition of Meteoric Resources to explore the Caldeira Project in Minas Gerais. Additionally, the American firm USA Rare Earth recently acquired the Serra Verde mine in Goiás, which is the first in Brazil to produce rare earths commercially.
Brazil possesses approximately 22 million tons of rare earth reserves, the second largest globally. These minerals are critical for high-performance magnets used in electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and defense systems. The current influx of foreign capital reflects a global strategic effort to diversify supply chains away from China's dominance in the sector.
