Lake du Cébron: 26-Year-Old Woman Dies After Illegal Free Party

On 2 August 2026, a 26‑year‑old woman from Montpellier drowned in the Lake du Cébron at Saint‑Loup‑Lamairé, Deux‑Sèvres. She had attended an illegal free‑party the previous night in Aubigny, a gathering that attracted around 2,000 participants and was halted by local farmers.

The lake is officially closed to swimming because of cyanobacterial contamination. Despite the rapid response of about twenty firefighters, a rescue boat and medical teams, resuscitation attempts failed and the victim was pronounced dead. Police opened an investigation to determine the precise circumstances; early findings suggest an accidental drowning, and no direct link to the party has been established.

The incident prompted renewed local warnings about the lake’s water quality and the enforcement of bans on unauthorized gatherings near the site.
