Lyon allocates funds for bus station security and faces social service scrutiny

The Métropole de Lyon has announced an additional 350,000 euros to improve security at the international bus station in the Gerland district. This funding follows reports of increased insecurity affecting residents, local businesses, and travelers since the station relocated from Lyon Perrache in January 2026. The station handles over 200 buses daily and attracts three million visitors annually.

The new budget, set for a vote on September 28, will fund improved lighting, the fencing of the station and adjacent parking, better signage, and the securing of pedestrian paths. Current security measures include 24-hour video surveillance and security agents. Gilles Gascon, vice-president of the Métropole de Lyon, noted that the security challenges following the station's transfer were not fully anticipated.

Separately, the Lyon Communal Center for Social Action (CCAS) is facing scrutiny following a report from the Regional Chamber of Accounts. While the city has tripled its subsidies to the CCAS since 2019—now totaling 19.4 million euros—the report highlights financial tensions and governance flaws. The CCAS manages a 51-million-euro budget and provides essential services, including housing support, meals, and hygiene facilities for vulnerable populations.
