France bans non-union protests following widespread unrest

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a ban on demonstrations not organized by trade unions across the country. This decision follows violent protests on October 17, driven by rising living costs and fuel prices, which resulted in approximately 2,500 arrests and over 1,000 injuries to police and emergency responders.

Authorities have implemented localized measures to maintain order, including night curfews in parts of Marseille and Toulouse, and bans on gatherings in central Paris near the Louvre and Champs-Élysées. In Lyon, a total ban on demonstrations has been announced for October 24. While union-led marches are permitted, officials may mandate alternative routes to protect commercial districts and public buildings.

The unrest caused significant economic damage, with nearly 3,000 businesses reported affected by looting and vandalism. High-end retailers, including Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Céline, were among those targeted. In response, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced a dedicated support fund to assist businesses with restocking and covering employee salaries.
