Lyon Métropole cuts €120,000 in bicycle repair workshop subsidies
The Métropole de Lyon has confirmed the removal of €120,000 in direct subsidies previously allocated to associative bicycle self-repair workshops. This decision has sparked significant backlash from local cycling networks and mobility associations.
Representatives from the network La Clavette expressed anger over the move, noting that while the funding represents a small percentage of the Métropole's overall budget, it is vital for associations providing public services. The funding had historically been supported and voted on unanimously, including by right-wing officials, before the current executive decided to end the support for 2026.
Protesters recently demonstrated at the Métropole de Lyon building, using bicycles and broken parts to symbolize the loss of resources. Workshop operators warn that the lack of funding will lead to staff reductions, limited opening hours, and a decreased capacity to serve the community, potentially making bicycle maintenance less accessible to the public.
