Lyon officials fight to extend rent control measures
The rent control experiment currently active in approximately 70 French municipalities, including Lyon and Villeurbanne, faces expiration in November 2026. Local officials and advocacy groups are calling for the permanent extension of the regulation to protect tenant purchasing power.
Lyon Mayor Grégory Doucet and Deputy Boris Tavernier are advocating for the measure to continue, with Tavernier proposing an extension until 2028 in the National Assembly. They warn that the end of the program could result in monthly rent increases of up to 100 euros for some residents. The association Que Choisir Ensemble reports that rent control allows tenants to save an average of 500 euros per year, with savings reaching up to 1,700 euros annually in Paris.
The future of the policy remains uncertain as the Senate is scheduled to vote on its status on October 21. While some local leaders, such as Lyon Métropole President Véronique Sarselli, have expressed opposition to the measure, claiming it hinders the rental market, proponents argue it is a vital tool for social justice and economic stability for students and low-income households.
