Lyon tourism faces summer decline amid heatwaves

Lyon's tourism sector experienced a significant downturn this summer, according to data from OnlyLyonTourisme et Congrès. The city saw a nearly 20% drop in visitors at the Place Bellecour tourist office and a 7.8% decrease in foot traffic within the Vieux Lyon district.

The decline extended to various hospitality and cultural sectors. Hotel occupancy rates fell from 67% to 65.5%, despite efforts by hoteliers to adjust room prices. Museum attendance dropped by 4.2%, while overall tourist attraction visits fell by 8.3%.

Analysts attribute this slump to a combination of extreme weather and economic factors. The Rhône region faced 31 days of heatwave alerts between July and August, which likely deterred travelers, alongside broader issues regarding consumer purchasing power. To recover, industry professionals are looking toward business tourism through upcoming congresses and the annual Fête des Lumières in the autumn.
