Lyon transport union criticizes new security measures

The CGT union for Lyon's TCL public transport network has criticized security measures announced by the Métropole de Lyon following the death of an 82-year-old man who suffered a heart attack during a robbery on Metro Line D.

In response to the incident, Véronique Sarselli, President of the Métropole de Lyon, proposed several measures, including the creation of a ‘metropolitan transport brigade’. However, the CGT has labeled the announcement an ‘effet d’annonce’ (publicity stunt), arguing that it lacks essential details regarding the brigade's functions, legal status, and funding.

The union has raised questions about whether the new agents would be public employees or private security contractors. Additionally, the CGT expressed concern that the funding for these security measures might be diverted from the maintenance and modernization of the aging transport network, such as elevators, escalators, and rolling stock. The union also contested a proposal to provide free TCL travel for police officers.
