Lyra of Naxos sculpture begins journey to Switzerland

A massive monolithic sculpture known as the ‘Lyra of Naxos’ has begun its journey from the Kinidaro quarry on the island of Naxos to Basel, Switzerland. Created by sculptor Tobias Ballaty from a single piece of white Naxian marble, the artwork measures 12 by 6 by 6 meters and weighs approximately 500 to 560 tons.

The transport operation is a complex logistical undertaking involving a specialized 12-axle self-propelled heavy transport vehicle. Due to the sculpture's six-meter width, the journey to the port of Naxos is being conducted in multiple night phases to accommodate road constraints. Authorities have requested that residents and drivers keep the route clear of parked vehicles to ensure safe passage.

The project, which has been in development for approximately three years, is expected to be completed by Saturday when a specialized ship arrives to transport the piece to Switzerland. Given the scale of the work, there are discussions regarding a potential entry into the Guinness World Records.
