Lyrboton Kome ancient site reveals major Roman olive oil production hub
Archaeological excavations at the 2,000-year-old Lyrboton Kome site in Antalya, Turkey, have revealed a major olive oil production center from the Roman Era. Known as 'Elaibaris' or 'olive farm,' the settlement functioned as a significant production hub featuring dozens of workshops and large-scale production facilities.
The findings highlight the influential economic role of women in antiquity. Specifically, the Demeter Priestess Arete used her own wealth to establish a foundation and construct an olive oil tower. The revenue generated from the site's extensive olive oil production contributed significantly to the economic strength and monumental construction of the nearby city of Perge.
