Bulgarian football legend Lyuboslav Penev is celebrating his 60th birthday. Known as a prolific striker and a key figure of Bulgaria’s ‘Golden Generation,’ Penev’s career spanned successful stints in both Bulgaria and Spain.
During his time with CSKA Sofia, he scored 80 goals in 101 league matches, winning two Bulgarian championships and four national cups. His success led to a move to Spain, where he spent six seasons as captain of Valencia CF, scoring 67 goals. He also achieved a ‘double’ in Spain with Atletico Madrid during the 1995/96 season, winning both the league title and the Copa del Rey.
On the international stage, Penev earned 62 caps and scored 14 goals for the Bulgarian national team. He represented his country at Euro 1996 and the 1998 World Cup. Following his playing career, he transitioned into coaching, managing teams including the Bulgarian national team, Litex Lovech, and CSKA. He currently serves as the head coach of Lokomotiv Sofia.
