M-NAV implements new ATM system to enhance Macedonian airspace safety

Macedonia's Air Traffic Management (M-NAV) has implemented a new Air Traffic Management (ATM) system to enhance the safety, security, and efficiency of the country's airspace. During a visit to the Skopje control tower, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski highlighted that the system is critical due to rising traffic volumes.

Data shows a significant increase in flights over Macedonian airspace, with 173,000 aircraft recorded in the first six months of 2026, representing a 12.2% increase compared to 2025 and a 27% increase compared to 2023.

The procurement process for the ATM system, which was contracted to the Italian company Leonardo in 2018, had faced long-term delays and investigations between 2018 and 2024. Nikoloski noted that the new M-NAV leadership has successfully brought the system into full operation. Additionally, a new radar system installed at the Skopje control tower in 2025 is currently in the final stages of testing.
