M. V. Canawaima cleared to resume Guyana-Suriname ferry services

The M. V. Canawaima has been cleared to resume passenger and vehicular ferry operations between Guyana and Suriname following a successful maritime safety reinspection on August 13, 2026.

Joint management entities Canawaima Ferry Service Inc. (Guyana) and Canawaima Management Company N. V. (Suriname) confirmed that regulatory restrictions were lifted, preventing a scheduled suspension of services. The vessel provides a critical link between Moleson Creek, Guyana, and South Drain, Suriname, facilitating daily passenger transit and commercial trade.

The reinspection addressed previous requirements regarding life-saving and firefighting systems, crew safety certifications, and structural hull integrity. While specific mechanical defects resolved during the process were not disclosed, the companies stated that technical follow-ups will continue under an agreed framework with maritime inspectors.
