M. V. Canawaima ferry faces safety concerns and replacement urgency

The M. V. Canawaima, a ferry providing essential connections between Suriname and Guyana, is facing significant technical and safety challenges. Following an acute sailing ban imposed by the Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) on August 22, 2026, due to serious deficiencies, the service resumed on August 28. However, the vessel is currently in a temporary transition period and is only permitted to operate until September 28, pending further inspections.

Inspections revealed that critical systems, including fire safety, rapid evacuation equipment, radar, and engines, did not meet required standards. An independent inspector noted that the vessel's technical lifespan may only extend until 2027, making the search for a replacement urgent.

Faizel Baarn, presidential advisor for aviation and maritime affairs, described the technical condition as concerning and emphasized that passenger and cargo safety must remain the priority. Amidst expected increases in traffic due to oil and gas developments in the region, officials are considering the necessity of a new vessel or a system utilizing two ferries, though the financial feasibility of such an expansion remains under investigation.
