M1 Support Services wins $10B U.S. Army helicopter training contract

The U.S. Army has awarded a contract worth up to $10 billion to M1 Support Services to lead the ‘Flight School Next’ initiative. The program, which can run through August 2052, aims to provide initial rotary-wing training for between 800 and 1,500 future pilots annually at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

Under a contractor-owned, contractor-operated model, M1 will provide aircraft, maintenance, simulators, and academic instruction. The M1-led consortium includes Robinson Helicopter Company, Quantum Helicopters, General Dynamics Information Technology, and the University of North Dakota Aerospace Foundation.

The program will utilize the Robinson R66 helicopter as its primary training platform. This transition is expected to significantly reduce costs, with the R66’s hourly operating cost estimated to be approximately 50% lower than the UH-72 Lakota currently in use. Additionally, the new training system is designed to better prepare pilots for more advanced aircraft, such as the AH-64E Apache and UH-60M Black Hawk, by addressing deficiencies in foundational skills found in previous training models.
