M6 motorway operating contract signed for 44 billion forints

The Hungarian Ministry of Transport and Investment has signed an 11-year operating contract for the section of the M6 motorway between Érdi-tető and Dunaújváros. The agreement, valued at 44 billion forints, was awarded to the existing concessionaire that has operated the motorway for the past two decades.

Minister Dávid Vitézy stated that this decision results in a 105 billion forint saving for the state compared to a previously planned 149 billion forint arrangement. The Minister noted that a review by the Ministry of Construction and Transport revealed that the previous administration had intended to award the contract to MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt., a company linked to Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szíjj, at a significantly higher cost.

This development follows legal scrutiny regarding the previous management of the motorway. The Budapest Police Headquarters has been investigating allegations of breach of trust related to the motorway's operation. Minister Vitézy indicated that the termination of the MKIF concession contract, which manages the entire expressway network, is also being considered to achieve further savings.
