M6 motorway project in Sydney lacks confirmed completion date
The New South Wales government has admitted there is currently no confirmed completion date for the $3 billion M6 motorway project in southern Sydney. NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison informed the state’s budget estimates committee that while contractors are on-site, an official opening date for the four-kilometre underground stretch between Arncliffe and Kogarah has not been set.
This admission follows previous guidance from Transport for NSW, which had suggested a late 2028 opening. The project has faced significant setbacks, including a years-long standoff between the government and contractors, and a 10-metre-wide sinkhole that opened above a tunnel at Rockdale in March 2024. Work on the final section only resumed in June after the previous stalemate was resolved.
