M82 Motorway to begin free trial on August 28, 2026

Thailand's Ministry of Transport is set to begin a free trial period for the M82 motorway (Bang Khun Thian–Ban Phaeo section) starting August 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM. The trial will cover a 16.4-kilometer stretch from Ekachai to Ban Phaeo, extending the existing service to create a continuous 25-kilometer route.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Pipat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed that structural load tests conducted with the Engineering Institute of Thailand have met all safety standards. The free usage period is expected to last until 2072, or until the toll collection systems are fully installed. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion on Rama 2 Road by approximately 20% and decrease travel time to southern Thailand by at least 40 minutes.

Safety regulations for the trial include a speed limit of 80 km/h for four-wheeled vehicles and 65 km/h for vehicles with more than four wheels. Four entry/exit points will be operational: Phanthai Norasing, Mahachai 1, Mahachai 2, and Ban Phaeo. Authorities have coordinated with highway police and rescue units to ensure 24-hour assistance for commuters.
