Five teenagers were killed in a head-on collision on the M9 motorway in Co Kildare, Ireland, during the early hours of Sunday, August 16. The crash occurred when a BMW, suspected to be stolen, was traveling the wrong way on the northbound carriageway and struck a Hyundai.

The occupants of the Hyundai, a family traveling toward Dublin Airport, were all seriously injured. The victims include three women in their 20s and 30s and a seven-year-old boy. The child and the women are receiving treatment at various hospitals, with some in critical condition.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly described the incident as “horrific” and noted a concerning trend of reckless driving, suggesting some youths perform dangerous maneuvers to gain “likes” on social media. The investigation has been referred to Fiosrú, the Police Ombudsman, to examine the circumstances and police response. Authorities are also investigating potential links between the teenagers and local criminal activity, including recent burglaries.
