Ireland motorway crash: Five teens killed in wrong-way collision

Five teenagers, aged 15 to 18, were killed in a head-on collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare, Ireland. The group was driving a stolen BMW in the wrong direction on the northbound lane when they struck a Hyundai. The collision also left four members of a family—three women and a seven-year-old boy—with serious injuries. The victims in the BMW have been identified as Joe Carthy, Kamil Pustkowski, Jack Kennedy, Alex McCarthy, and Jeremy O’Brien.

The incident has sparked intense public debate regarding the influence of social media trends, specifically the promotion of reckless driving on platforms like TikTok. Authorities believe the youths were filming themselves while driving in an attempt to provoke a police chase. TikTok has declined an invitation to appear before the Oireachtas media committee to address these concerns, a decision described by committee chairman Alan Kelly as a ‘slap in the face’ to the public.

In the aftermath, communities in Carlow and Kildare have held vigils for both the deceased and the injured family. Tusla, the child and family agency, confirmed that one of the deceased teenagers was in its care and two others were known to the agency.
