Maarten van der Weijden to swim 270km for cancer research
Olympic swimming champion Maarten van der Weijden will begin a 270-kilometer swim on Monday, August 17, to raise funds for childhood cancer research. The journey starts in his hometown of Vught and passes through 22 cities, including 's-Hertogenbosch, Tilburg, Breda, Gouda, and Woerden, before concluding at the Prinses Máxima Center for pediatric oncology in Utrecht.
The funds raised will support the For Life program at the Prinses Máxima Center, which focuses on researching the immediate and long-term side effects of cancer treatments. The goal is to ensure that children who recover from cancer can maintain a high quality of life. Van der Weijden, who was diagnosed with leukemia at age 19, intends to present the donations to the Prinses Máxima Center Foundation on August 22.
