Mabel Matiz issued travel ban following obscenity investigation
Turkish singer Mabel Matiz, born Fatih Karaca, has been issued a travel ban following an investigation into his song and music video ‘Ha Leylim’ for alleged obscenity. The investigation was launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office after the video, which depicts a retro wedding, drew social media scrutiny regarding its perceived themes.
During his testimony at the Istanbul Justice Palace, Karaca defended his work as a piece of art. He stated that the song was written to express love and that the music video, co-directed with Sinan Tuncay, was intended to evoke Thracian wedding traditions. He argued that scenes showing two men looking at each other or dancing do not constitute obscenity and noted that such expressions are legitimate subjects of cinema, art, and literature.
Karaca expressed frustration over the systematic interpretation of his works through the lens of his identity, questioning whether similar scrutiny would be applied to other artists. This investigation follows a previous case regarding his song ‘Perperişan,’ for which he was acquitted of obscenity charges in May.
