MAC VAL museum closes SMITH exhibition after severe storm

The MAC VAL museum in Vitry-sur-Seine has indefinitely closed the photography exhibition ‘Ici, grand ouvert’ by the artist SMITH following a severe storm on August 27, 2026.

The storm, described as having tornado-like qualities, caused significant damage to the roof of the temporary exhibition space, which had previously shown signs of cracking due to extreme heat. Large quantities of water flooded the area, damaging several artworks. While the museum's permanent collections and reserves remain unharmed, the specific hall hosting the exhibition remains inaccessible pending repairs.

Artist SMITH noted that the weather event reflects the themes of the exhibition, which explores human transformation in the face of global catastrophes and climate change. The museum intends to maintain its programming for the European Heritage Days on September 19 and 20, though some adaptations may be necessary.
