Arari couple arrested for allegedly attempting to sell child for R$ 100

A couple has been arrested in Arari, Maranhão, on suspicion of attempting to sell a 17-month-old child for R$ 100. The incident occurred on a Sunday evening when a young woman discovered the child on a bridge.

According to reports, the child was in poor hygienic and health conditions. The mother, one of the suspects, was located at a nearby bar consuming alcohol. Witnesses also alleged that the couple had offered alcohol to the child.

The Municipal Civil Guard intervened and located the young woman carrying the child before apprehending the suspects. The child was placed under the care of a relative following assistance from the Tutelary Council and social protection services. The Civil Police are currently investigating the case, specifically looking into potential human trafficking and child neglect or violence.
